Why Kylie Jenner is wrong for saying “I don’t know about after 30”

In a recent interview for Paper magazine’s YOUth issue, the cover girl was quoted saying that she “doesn’t believe in after 30”. Immediately, I almost blew a gasket. As a 30 something, I absolutely believe in waiting until your thirties. In fact, I think this is the intended purpose. After all, that’s why the phrase was coined “settling down”. You’re not settled in your twenties. Then again, this absurd statement is coming from someone who is not yet even in her twenties.

I used to be embarrassed and thought that I was frivolous for not knowing, in my late twenties and early thirties, what I wanted to do with my life. I used to feel so much pressure for not being where I thought I should be at a certain age. I was embarrassed that as a “grown woman,” I was still trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow up. It has taken some time, but I’ve finally succumbed to my heart’s desire. To write. To blog. And I still have aspirations to be a wife and a mother. And I don’t think there should a time cap on that, especially one dictated by an 18-year old. Hell, if Janet (#MissJacksonIfUNasty) can start “planning” her family at almost 50, then surely there’s nothing wrong with waiting until you’re 30.

To put the quote in context, Kyle was referring to having babies, revealing that she doesn’t want to wait as long as her sisters, Kourtney and Kim Kardashian. She stated “I don’t want to start [having] a baby when I’m 30! I don’t believe in after 30-I don’t know”.

If I may, allow me to remind you that Kylie Jenner is not your average 18 year-old kid. When I was that age, I think I was just trying to sign the lease on my first apartment. In my household, the rule was (understood) that you go to college, get solidified in your career, save some money and then you fall in love and start having babies. Clearly, Miss Jenner is the rule, not the exception.

After 30 doesn’t mean you’re old and washed up! Life is really just beginning for some. I honesty tell people that I want to put off having kids until that age and they must think I’m crazy. But I’m working, in grad school and trying to figure out what I want to do with my life. I also have found myself cringing at comments that I made when I was younger so maybe in a few years Kylie will do the same in regards to this.
