I had only planned on watching the 2017 Grammy Awards for one reason anyway: Beyoncé. And as expected, her performance was nothing short of show-stopping.
Queen Bey delivered an interpretation that was both poetic, political and symbolic. Beyoncé is known for her all-female acts that include musicians and dancers alike. In the opening scene, the Queen stunned with holographic images of her pregnant-self adorn in jewels that resembled Hera, the Greek-goddess of women, marriage and childbirth. Amongst a bed of roses on the ground, the mother-to-be paid homage to the child she lost during a previous pregnancy with husband Jay-Z.
On stage, Beyoncé gave us a show that appeased both the eyes and the ears with images in slow motion that transformed to different versions of herself and ultimately the Queen walking to her throne to serenade the crowd. With vocals on point, as she laid almost horizontally in a chair that dipped her back to 90 degrees, we watched in awe as the singer wowed the crowd in a way that only she can.
This performance, in my opinion, was more captivating than Gaga’s recent Super bowl half-time show one week ago today.
After her mesmerizing show, she then graced the stage to accept the award for Best Urban Contemporary Album where she thanked the Grammy voters and everyone who “worked so hard to beautifully capture the profundity of deep Southern culture”. She went on to elaborate that her work on the visual album of Lemonade was created to “give a voice to our pain, our struggles, our darkness, and our history” and to “show images to [her] children that reflect their beauty so they can grow up in a world where they look in the mirror, first through their own families as well as the news, the Super Bowl, the Olympics, the White House and the Grammys and see themselves and have no doubt that they are beautiful, intelligent and capable.”
And in other noteworthy Grammy news, Adele apologizes and says, “I’m sorry for swearing” before stopping the show, literally, to start again before she brings down the house with her tribute to the late George Michael and praises Beyonce for in her acceptance speech for Album of the Year.
