Why I Wear a Ring on my Left Hand

I’ve always heard that you can attract what you want, but many people wonder how to apply it.

In 2006, Rhonda Byrne exploded onto the scent with the critically-acclaimed self-help book, The Secret. In her writing, the author explains how to use the law of attraction to create the life that you want.

Practitioners of this philosophy have credited the doctrine with fortunes such as good health, wealth and an abundance of love and success in other areas of their lives. Simply put, this law maintains that what you think about, you bring about.

The Secret may have been a precursor to what many self-care gurus refer to in this era as  “manifestation”. While some enthusiasts have gravitated toward affirmations, the law of attraction has been a meditative practice since the early 19th century and can be incorporated into most lifestyles.

So why on Earth would a single woman go so far as to wear a ring on her engagement hand if she’s not engaged? Wouldn’t that scare off a potential mate or at the very least jinx a relationship? Well, with regard to my desire to attract companionship, not only do I practice affirmations and visualizations, I’ve gone a step further using actual artifacts to obtain the things that I want. Before I wrote my first book, Ghosts of Love Lives Past, I added words such as “best-selling author” and “New York Times Bestseller” to my vision board and referred to “the book that I’ll write one day” long before I ever started writing it. As far as my relationship status, I bought myself a faux engagement ring that I wear around my house, usually after I’ve showered and am getting ready for bed. For me, being able to see the ring on my hand makes it more real to me. But it doesn’t stop there. Aside from seeing a physical representation of what I want, I then get in bed and pray or meditate about the relationship that I’m seeking.

I’ve heard other people doing similar things. In 1997, comedian and actor, Jim Carey famously reminisced on The Oprah Winfrey show that he once wrote himself a check for $10 million dollars and with hard work and consistency, was able to achieve his goal. With that said, it really isn’t a “secret” after all. And while it may not be a magical formula for making all your dreams come true, I’m a believer in that whatever you believe in your heart, will work for you, be it science, religion or new-age philosophy.

What are your thoughts? Do you believe in the power of positive thinking? Can meditative practice be a catalyst for changing our lives?
